Lighting is worth considering too. Integrated LED shelf lighting can look great, but it needs restraint. Too much and the wall starts feeling like a retail display. A soft wash on a few shelves is usually enough.

Material choices should also reflect how hard the room gets used. A formal sitting room can tolerate more delicate finishes than the main family TV room. Kids, pets, and regular traffic change the equation.

New construction and renovation need different planning
